7th July…Eagle AC membership hits new peak

graph_upAt the end of June, Athletics Ireland recently released their membership figures as they stood at the start of that month. It now shows that Eagle Athletic Club has a record 178 members as compared to 162 members at the end of December 2013.

With several months in 2014 to go, there are likely to be more members joining once the summer is over and the long bright evenings come to an end. In terms of adult membership, the club is still one of the largest in Cork City and County.

3rd July…Corkbeg 4 mile race report

Race Report on the Corkbeg 4n… July 3rd 2014…..by Denis Looney

This 4 mile road race promoted by East Cork AC was held in and around the village of Whitegate in East Cork. The last time I ran it, the race was a 5 mile event over a different course. It’s a pretty low key affair with 120 to 130 runners with 8 Eagle AC members at this year’s event. Race HQ was the National school in Whitegate and as is typical with John Walshe and East Cork AC, entry was smooth and at €5 very good value. There was ample parking in the area.

The race start was about 800 metres from race HQ, of which 500 metres was up a fairly steep hill. This used to be part of mile 1 in one of the older 5 mile versions of the race. The weather was cloudy and relatively cool. Pretty good racing conditions.

corkbeg4m_map

The course itself runs in an anticlockwise direction in the hills behind Whitegate village. It is also a net downhill (see profile below). The course is run on open roads. With the exception of the last mile, most of them were out in the country with little traffic and not many white lines up the middle :o)

corkbeg4m_profile

Mile 1 started with a climb for about 400 metres then falls away gently. You turned left after 1200 metres. At the 1 mile mark you climbed again and then it was downhill to 1.5 miles with a long uphill drag to the next left turn in Upper Aghada just before mile 2. From there it was downhill to a sharp left turn on the outskirts of Whitegate and a climb past the 3 mile mark. Then it was downhill to an even sharper right hand turn and then running downhill to Whitegate itself. A quick right and left and we were on the seafront running along the main road. There was a green in the village and a decent crowd cheering us on. From here there was under 800 metres of flat running, turn left off the main road, then left again into a small housing estate and onto the finish by the playground. These last 2 bends had quite a bit of gravel on the inside but didn’t cause any problems.

Afterwards Enable Ireland had a fund raising barbeque on the village green (thus the earlier crowds) where for a small donation we got a decent feed. In typical East Cork AC fashion, John Walshe was handing out full printed results by 9.15 with the prize giving concluded by 9.45.

29th June…Pat Twomey wins M60 category in 5 mile race in London

Pat_TwomeyBack in mid-June, Pat Twomey took part in the Concorde 5 mile road race in London. Organised by British Airways Athletics Club, this race attracted a small field of just 67 runners with Pat picking up the first prize in the M60 category. The other two M60 runners who finished ahead of him picked up prizes in the younger age categories instead.

We asked Pat about the race, why the entry numbers were small and how it compared to races back in Cork. Here’s what he said….

The reason for it being a small entry is choice and maybe races are not booming in London like here in Cork. There were 3 or4 races in London that morning… Richmond Park 10km (attracted 248 runners), ‘GoDad’ run for prostate cancer in Crystal Palace park, & ‘race for life’ 5km also in Richmond park.

The Concorde reminded me of a BHAA race as it was organised by British Airways AC from their Concorde sports club in Cranford near Heathrow. It was £11 to enter & £13 for non-affiliated runners.

The race was very well organised with lots of stewards and I was made feel very welcome. There were showers and a bit of a spread afterwards which was very enjoyable.

The biggest difference between that race and races here was size of entries as that would be considered a very small race here but I got the impression that the Concord 5 organisers were very happy with the turnout there (it was a small bit down on last year’s race).

The course was around trails, tracks, housing estates and a couple of flyover bridges but it worked very well as it avoided traffic for the most part. The participants in the main seemed to be seasoned club runners.

As to the differences running in London and here – while I thoroughly enjoyed any races I did abroad, there is still something magical about running a race in Cork, but I would say that wouldn’t I? :o)

9th June…Cork City Marathon stats

With the Cork City Marathon now out of the way, it’s time to have a look back at some of the Eagle AC numbers in the event. This is a breakdown of members in 2014 compared to last year…

Cork_City_Marathon2013v2014

In 2013, a total of 19 Eagle AC members took part in the full marathon. The number in 2014 was up one to 20. This meant that Eagle AC was the largest athletic club by numbers in the full marathon with Watergrasshill AC second with 15 and St.Finbarrs AC third with 14. Both Clonmel AC and Marathon Club Ireland had 9 each.

In the half-marathon, the club had 26 members in 2013. That was up 54% this year with 40 members taking part in the half. In terms of numbers, Eagle AC was the largest club in the half with St.Finbarr’s AC second with 34, Watergrasshill AC third with 19, Youghal AC fourth with 18 and Leevale AC fifth with 14.

In the relay event, the club had one official team of 5 members in 2013. In 2014, the club had 5 teams of 5 which is a huge jump. Although it’s hard to know exactly how many athletic clubs were taking part due to the team names chosen, Eagle AC was the highest with 5.  Togher AC had two, Leevale AC had two, CIT AC had two with others like East Cork AC with one team taking first place.

All told, some 86 members of Eagle AC took part in this years Cork City Marathon event. That represents roughly half of the current membership.
