A retrospective look at the London Marathon…by John Desmond
After putting up the results of the three guys at the London Marathon, I noticed that Alan O’Brien’s time seem to be down a bit. I was following his live tracker during the race and he was on target for about a 2:50 marathon early on. I knew Alan wasn’t going for a PB but doing London more for the sense of occasion.
I thought perhaps Alan might have been feeling the pace a bit but no, our 2014 ‘Athlete of the Year’ had other ideas as I found out today.
Yip…that’s him having a pint of beer at the halfway mark! …….and then ran the second half to finish in 2:54:29!!
So if someone tells you in future that they were taking ‘High Fives’ during a marathon, don’t assume it’s the gels they’re talking about ;o)
We had two members in this half-marathon in Wexford with John McCarthy and Tim McCarthy making the journey.
Place Name Surname M/F Cat Club Chip Time
72 Tim McCarthy M Sen Eagle AC 1:31:46
167 John McCarthy m Sen EAGLE A.C 1:41:04
Conditions on the day were quite tough with a strong breeze to contend with. The course itself certainly wasn’t flat with an ascent of 200 or so feet to contend with.
Tim McCarthy’s time of 1:31:46 was a new PB for him and comes just a month after running a PB of 3:29:23 in the Barcelona Marathon back in mid-March.
Back in September of 2013, Tim ran his previous PB for the half with a time of 1:41:05 in Charleville so he has come a long way in the last 18 months.
Three members traveled to this years London Marathon with two sub 3 hour performances being recorded..
Gearoid O’Leary…3:07:46
Ronan Boland…2:50:21
Alan O’Brien…2:54:29.
That was a new PB for Ronan by over 5 minutes having run 2:55:47 in the Nice-Cannes Marathon back in November 2014.
Four members took part in this years Passage West Community 10k road race on Friday the 24th of April.
7 EDDIE BYRNE EAGLE AC M40 41:44
16 JOE MURPHY EAGLE AC M50 44:23
17 DENIS CARROLL EAGLE AC M50 44:27
44 PAUL COTTER EAGLE AC M50 47:14
59 DEIRDRE O CALLAGHAN EAGLE AC F40 49:41…1st F40
Well done to Deirdre O’Callaghan who managed to get into the prizes by winning the F40 category.
Race report
Passage West 10 KM…by Paul Cotter
Five Eagles took part in this race last week. Eddie Byrne had one of his best runs ever to finish in seventh position in a time of 41:44. Joe Murphy was next, coming in in 16th in 44:23, closely followed by Denis Carroll in 17th position in a time of 44:27. I was next in 44th position in 47:14 and our remaining competitor was Deirdre O’Callaghan in 59th position in a time of 49:41 to come in as fourth woman in an excellent run.
Despite the forecast the weather was warm and sunny. At 177 runners the field was disappointing and well down on previous years, despite the proceeds going to the Cork City Hospitals Childrens Club. This is a pity as this race is extremely well stewarded with lots of volunteers guaranteeing the safety of the racers all along the course. Again, the grub spread in the GAA club was excellent. I wonder if the problem is the hill. The course goes three miles out from Passage along the railway walk and then up what is a very severe hill to the heights above Passage before a fast last mile downhill. The total ascent is around 450 feet and this is really a savage hill. Perhaps the organizers should consider a five km or four mile course, perhaps and out and back between Passage and Rafeen? In any case well done to all concerned. Thanks to Derek Costello of Eagle for the photos.
The club is pleased to announce that entries to the 2015 Cheetah Run 4 mile race in Fota Wildlife Park will open on Thursday the 30th of April… In 2014, all of the 900 entries were sold out online on the day.
