This was the 26th year of this particular race and once again, it was a success with over 300 runners taking part.

One of the features of the Carrigaline 5 mile road race every year is that a percentage of the entry fee should go towards organisations in the community where the event is held. With just over 300 people taking part in the race last Sunday, a total of €650 was raised…€325 going to Foróige, a local youth club and €325 going to Carrigaline Meals on Wheels.

24 Dec 2013…Joanne Fearon of Eagle AC runs 12 marathons in 12 days for charity

Dec 2013…

Over the Christmas period, Eagle AC member Joanne Fearon ran a record 12 marathons in 12 days on a treadmill in order to raise funds for the neonatal ward at Cork University Maternity Hospital.

Club member Gerard Down went along to help out on day 1 and stayed for all 12

Club member Gerard Down went along to help out on day 1 and stayed for all 12

Starting on the 13th of December on a treadmill in Mahers Sport in Cork City, Joanne had an accumulated time of 39 hours 03 minutes and 21 seconds by the 10th day. As everything was recorded and witnessed, that should be a new Guinness World Record for the fastest time on a treadmill for running 10 marathons in 10 days.

After setting the record 10, Joanne went on to complete another two marathons over the following two days. Her times for the marathon have been remarkably consistent…3:53, 3:55, 3:55, 3:55, 3:55, 3:55, 3:53, 3:57, 3:55, 3:53, 3:55, 3:51

In the end, over €12,000 was raised for the neonatal ward.

10 Oct 2013…Eagle AC commemorates Cork to Crosshaven ‘Marathon’

From Oct 2013…

On Sat. Sept 28th 2013, 16 Eagle AC members set out to repeat the exploits of the runners of the 1908 Cork to Crosshaven ‘Marathon’. Starting at Bridge Street in Cork City, members of the club ran the 18 miles to Crosshaven following much of the old railway line which is now a walkway. Each participant donated €5, with the entire proceeds going to the Irish Cancer Society.

The run also featured in the Carrigdhoun newspaper. The Carrigdhoun has a circulation of about 6,000 copies and is sold mainly in the South Cork region.

The 1908 Cork to Crosshaven “Marathon” is featured here on Cork Running Blog http://corkrunning.blogspot.ie/2013/05/the-cork-to-crosshaven-marathon-of-1908.html
