Club Notes… by Elaine Guinane & team

Hi Everyone,
Stepping in for Karen this week who, like many others, is getting the game face on for Berlin Marathon on Sunday. The very best of luck to all our members travelling at the weekend; at the risk of leaving someone out (and apologies for this), the gang heading over include Karen Bevan, Derek Costello, Mairead Lonergan, Ian Roche, Mark Smith, Derek O Keeffe, Lisa Boland, Ronan Boland, Vivian Foley and Sean O Keeffe.. Have a great run, everyone.

Special Mention to Richard Piotrowski this week: As reported on last week’s mail Richard, one of our outstanding masters athletes, gave a terrific performance in the Cross Country world Championship event in Malaga, finishing in 9th place and leading his National team to a silver medal. Unfortunately, luck was not Richard’s side as he tackled the 10km event this week. A runner went down ahead of Richard, which led to a bit of pushing from behind and Richard unfortunately took a tumble. Down but not out, Richard still managed to pick up again and finish the race in 8th place in an excellent time of 44.25. The incident did, however, end Richard’s involvement in the championships and rule him out of the 5km track race. Congratulations to Richard on his achievements prior to this and we wish him a speedy recovery!

We had several Eagles at this fundraiser last night. Well done to Denis Carroll who ran 22.57, and also spotted were Eddie Trindle and Ken Nyhan who took part in the walk to support this excellent cause. Pat Murphy was on hand to help with the Finish line timing, while several other Eagles were out supporting, taking photos and generally hanging around 😉

John Buckley 10
23 Eagles were at the annual John Buckley 10 miler on a very damp Saturday evening last. Some great times recorded, led home by Paul Cotter in a PB of 60 mins 23 secs, well done Paul. Quite a few category prize winners on the night, well done to Mike McGrath winning the M55 prize closely followed by Denis Carroll 3rd M55. Pat O’Connor used the race as a tempo run but picked up 2nd M50 for his troubles. Frances O’Connor was 2nd F55 and Andrew O’Farrell 3rd M65. We also had Alan O’Brien and Ed Fitz on pacing duties. Training/Sessions update:
Track Rota: We are delighted to have three new volunteers to help out with track rota- thanks to Neil Kingston, Dolores Gibbons and Gary Gibbons for offering their services.

Winter Targets: Cross Country season will be kicking off in the beginning of October. There will be a separate email sent out shortly about the club targeted events.
For anyone who would like to give cross country a go before the season kicks off, the Cork Athletics Cross-Country Leagues 2018 have begun with the next events being held on September 15th at 1pm and September 29th at 1pm at the Cork Athletics Grounds, Slieveroe Riverstick

Tempo Runs:
The Tempo runs are continuing on Thursday nights, using usual format: 2m warm up, tempo session and 1 mile warm down. Please note the tempo part starts at 7.15 so the warm should be done prior to this.
