Mike_McGrath1_200pixRace Report on the Coachford 5M From Mike McGrath : Confusion reigned at the start of this race as some pre-race on line and road side notices advertised the Race with a 7pm start time and others with a 7.30pm commencement. Unfortunately a few runners and walkers were caught out as the race set off at 7pm but this proved to be the only negative for what was a great event on a lovely Summer evening.

With all proceeds of the race going to Suicide Awareness it was encouraging to see over 215 runners and walkers compete in the event.Whilst not a flat course this was a testing race with a couple of nice inclines one of which you encountered in the first half mile. The course surface was perfect for running and could certainly deliver a few PB’s for those willing to chase them !

Expertly marshaled throughout ,the route was traffic free with a much needed traffic detour being organised at Dripsey so that the runners and walkers enjoyed a congestion free journey through this picturesque village.

With a fantastic spread of tea /coffee cakes and goodies at the finish for all ,the local community rallied to delivery what has become a great annual event. For those seeking category prizes this race will disappoint as only those in places 1st,2nd,and 3rd male and female were honoured ,something perhaps for Race Organisers to review if they are interested in increasing their numbers !

A lovely community based event, expertly organised and executed in the home town of Olympian Olive Loughnane who competed on the night, on a challenging route but one the author will certainly return to in 2015 ! Take a bow Coachford Community !

Mike McGrath in Cloyne

Race Report Cloyne 5K August 6th by Mike McGrath : This race is fast becoming one of the best and most popular 5K races in Cork. A few miles from Midleton en route to Ballycotton the entire local community assist on the night acting as Stewards, directing parking, ensuring that all 600 runners and spectators enjoy their visit to their village. Unlike a lot of other races parking, registering and moving around this event is so easy and is one certainly to run if you have not done so to date !

The route is flat , very fast and on a good mix of paved street and county roads which are closed for traffic & makes for a great circuit for running. A PB is certainly on the cards if you are in good form and with a nice down hill stretch to the finish outside the Community Centre you should have no excuses here !

A great spread of tea /coffee sandwiches and cakes and a goody bag awaits in the Community Centre so for €10 this race represents great value. With the aid of chip timing full results are pinned on the walls for inspection within 20 mins of the winner crossing the line ! Awesome organisation !
Whilst I was not in the category prizes I was delighted with my visit to Cloyne on this lovely balmy summer nite and am already planning a return in 2015

Shanagarry 5k : This was on Thurs 7th of Aug and had a field of 58 runners. Cathal Twomey was our only member present…

8th Aug…Race report on the 2014 Streets of Fermoy 5k Series

Mike_McGrath1_200pixRace Report on the 2014 Streets of Fermoy from Mike McGrath : Continuing with my 2014 Goal of participating in Races that I hadn’t undertaken before, I headed recently to Fermoy for the 3rd and final race in the 5K series in aid of the Fermoy Community Centre.

The route which starts in the Centre of the Town takes you up a pretty challenging incline up the main Street heading towards Cork City before turning right at the top of the town , rising again before bringing you through a small housing estate ! You then re-joined the main street and enjoyed a nice down line run to the finish at the Community Centre adjacent to the River. Not a route for a PB, but with a good surface,a circuit that will challenge you regardless of your level of running !

Just under a 100 runners taking part on the night in what was a very successful series with all the proceeds going towards the creation of a new dance studio in the Centre. A nice spread of tea, coffee and sandwiches including an excellent video of the entire race was shown before the prize giving ceremony.
A nice community based race at only €7, supporting a very worthy cause, a little too much traffic for my liking on the route but an event worthy of a return journey next year I hope!

26th July…Report on the Bere Island Midsummer Run by Mark Gallagher

bere-island

The third annual Bere Island Midsummer run took place on Saturday 12th of July 2014 in West Cork. This year’s event was the most popular to date with 114 runners taking part in the 5k and 10k runs. Last year’s race took place in sweltering heat so returning runners were not put off by the cooler conditions…a light south westerly wind prevailed with a clearing mist.

murphferryMaking it to the start line is an event in itself, by catching the ferry from ‘The Pontoon’, three miles east of Castletownbere , we arrived at the eastern end of the island at Rerrin Village. The 25 minute journey across Berehaven is a chance to catch up with other runners and discuss race tactics, latest injuries or gloating Garth Brooks tales. Being a relative newcomer to the sport it’s a case of ears open and mouth shut to take in tips from those more experienced. Discussions quickly ‘cut to the chase’ and a most important subject was which events have the best post-race spread. There was a definite pattern correlating a great spread with a great race. My travelling companions highlighted Midleton’s great show which included a selection of cakes for coeliacs. A mental note was duly made. Races at the other end of the scale were outlined to this novice, but lets not dwell on those less bothered with putting on a good show.

On disembarkation, it is a short walk to the registration and start line. The entry fee was €20, with the proceeds going to Bere Island GAA Club. Given the remote location and effort required in accessing the island numbers are small in comparison to other races, but this adds to the warmer welcome. The course which consists of two 5km loops is ‘undulating’. An honest 10km, might be another way of putting it. I had been getting back into a routine following a family holiday in June which had little running and lots of beer and, yes you guessed, cake. My trek around the Island in last years heat was done in 54 minutes. It was tough and hilly. A recent check on a popular running calculator gave me a time of 47:33 on entering my recent 1:46 half marathon time. It seemed a bit optimistic, so I gave myself a generous target of sub-fifty minutes.

Bere_Island_5k_0pt8m

The 5k lap consists of a run out of approximately a mile and a half with three notable climbs. Nothing too serious, but there were few Mark_Gallagher_12july2014flat parts, you’re either up or down. The return to the village is slightly less hilly with a nice puff of wind to cool you down. Then there’s a long drag up to the army camp followed by a quick downhill into Rerrin village and you’re nearly at the startline again for another lap. The course is on small country roads of tar and chip. Not many potholes given the less trafficked roads. I was pleased with my pace and kept enough in the tank with two 7:40’s for the last two miles. My finishing time was 47:50. Shane Causkey (East Cork) finished first 38:26, a man with connections on the island, so they were claiming that one for themselves. Eagle’s Kevin Sievewright finished 4th with a 41:38 after Pat Coleman of Eyeries (40:56) and Tipperary man Pat Casey (40:57).

There was post race tea, biscuits and sandwiches. I will have to do more research to gauge the standard against other races. Our time on the island was all too short given the ferry departing for the mainland soon after the race, and away we went again. Races in this part of the county are few and far between, this being the most westerly. It’s a great opportunity to come and see this part of the world and a good time of the year.

Race report from the organisers…..“Experienced marathoner Ger Copeland, a regular winner of the East of Ireland Marathon Series events, was the early pace setter in the men’s 12 hour race.  Undeterred by the quality field behind, Ger started fast and held a good pace; by the time four and a half hours had elapsed, he (Ger) had a 2.7 mile lead on Grellan McGrath and Aidan Blake, who had covered 30.3 miles (48.8k) and 28.5 miles (46k) respectively.  Unfortunately, Ger was forced to withdraw during the night because of injury, this left Grellan McGrath and Aidan Blake as front runners.  Both men kept up their consistent and steady pace throughout the night, with Grellan finishing on 130.3k (80.9 miles) and Aidan 124.9k (77.6 miles).  However, a winner could not be confirmed as Barry Thornton had chosen to run his 12 hours from 6.45am to 6.45pm, so was only starting as Grellan and Aidan were finishing.  Although he enjoyed a good run, Barry was unable to match the distances covered by Grellan McGrath (1st place) and Aidan Blake (2nd place) and after finishing on 121.1k (75.2 miles), he was forced to settle for 3rd place.”
